Spider-man Homecoming hit theaters this week and I was able to check it out Thursday night in Imax and it is absolutely spectacular! Marvel Studios nailed it. Tom Holland is undoubltely the best big screen interpretation of Peter Parker and Michael Keaton as the Vulture is the best best Spider-man villain since Doc Ock. I cannot wait to see what what they do next. Hopefully they can finally bring back J. Jonah Jameson and the Daily Bugle, because we all want pictures of Spider-man!
For the last couple years Hasbro has been really focusing on their 6" Marvel Legends but they've been keeping the 3.75" line alive with some great 2-packs. Just recenly they released Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy themed packs, and for the release of Homecoming they have a couple more. Today we're going to be taking a look at the movie specific Spider-man & Vulture pack, but they also have a comic 2-pack with Shocker and Spidey.
The PACKAGING is actually pretty nice, and fits in pretty well with the overall Marvel Legends look. The biggest difference is obviously the high card back, but its got some really attractive graphics on it. The only thing missing is a picture of Vulture along the front left side. In this case, Spidey flanks both figures instead of each side being character specific. The back shows off the figures well with a short little blurb, and also advertises the other set in the series.
The SCULPTING is really great for this scale, with Spider-man being the real winner of the set. Like I said in other reviews, I really think this is the best representation of the Homecoming costume in action figure form. He's got the sleek and slender build of Tom Holland, without losing any detail in the costume. Vulture looks pretty good as well, but is unfortunately inaccurate. His legs and torso look great, with his arms and legs being the problem areas. His arm are only slightly inaccurate with long gloves covering his forearms, but his head is the real let down. It doesn't resemble the film design all that much other than the visor covering his eyes. I have a feeling is could be reuse from a GI Joe figure. It's really disappointing considering these are targeted to more mature collectors, and even the kid 6" version is more movie accurate.
The only thing you need to watch out for is the PAINT, some samples are going to be sloppier than others. These guys aren't too bad though. The separation between blue and red on Spider-man's costume is pretty good, the black details tend to be more on the sloppy side though. Vulture fared a little bit better, he's got more paint ops than the kids version but less than the Marvel Legends figure. He sits some where in between. My only nitpick is the brightness of the grey on his legs. It's just a little too bright for my taste, a nice dark wash would have been great to dull them a bit while also bringing out some more detail.
The ARTICULATION on these guys is solid. Everything below the waist is great. The ankles, knees, and hips all have a great range of movement. Even Vultures hips aren't too restricted by the mechanical parts on his belt. Their shoulders are also great, however their ball jointed elbows don't quite have the range of motion I think most would like. Especially for a character like Spider-man. You can't quite get a 90 degree bend, so it limits display just a little bit.
I guess the only thing you could consider an ACCESSORY would be Vultures wings. They're just a little bit under scaled, but overall they look great. There's plenty of fine detailing in the sculpt, and even a little bit of articulation. The wings can move into a lowered position or up into a more aggressive looking one. They move together so you can't have one up and one down. There are two pegs in the flight pack and they snap really nicely and really tightly into Vultures back.
OVERALL, Spider-man is the real winner in this 2-Pack. Vulture looks pretty good but the inaccuracies in the sculpt hold him back from being truly great. Spider-man should fit right in with Hasbro's other assortments of Marvel Universe figures, and their MCU movie figures. It's nice to see 3.75" figures still get some love these days and with some Thor: Ragnarok figures already announced in this scale, hopefully Hasbro can keep the line going for years to come.
